MOTORCYCLISTS 46% OF THE DEAD IN TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS - INVESTIGATIONS CONTINUE FOR THE FATAL AGLANTZIA CRASH

Filenews 7 August 2025 - by Michalis Hatzivasilis

The price we are paying this year in motorcycle deaths as a result of road traffic collisions is heavy, with the Traffic Police looking for ways to convince drivers to be more careful.

According to data from the Traffic Department, this year 12 motorcyclists and moped drivers have been lost on the asphalt, compared to 10 throughout last year. Out of a total of 26 deaths from road accidents this year, this means that more than 46% of the fatalities are motorcycle drivers. Compared to last year, this year we have more fatal accidents with the dead, in the same period of time, being the same, i.e. 26 last year and 26 this year. This is due to the fact that last year we had the quadruple fatality in Limassol.

Also, according to statistics, 10 vehicle drivers, four pedestrians and one cyclist were killed in road collisions this year.  In most cases, the cause of the fatal road collision was excessive speed, carelessness of drivers and negligent driving.

The Traffic Police Directorate is expected to focus its attention on motorcyclists and pedestrians in the next five months, in order to inform drivers and road users in general about the dangers that lurk through targeted campaigns. On the one hand, as it was explained, there will be a preventive campaign and, above all, an information campaign, for these two categories of road users, and on the other hand, checks will be organized to ensure that all measures for safe driving by motorcyclists are complied with. It is inconceivable, we were told by the Traffic Police, that in seven months 12 motorcyclists' lives were lost, mainly due to speed, careless driving or because they did not wear their helmet. Most motorcycle riders were killed during the summer months, where its use is increasing in contrast to the winter which is very limited. As the Traffic Police has observed, many motorcycle drivers, especially during the night hours, develop high speeds, resulting in a vehicle cutting off their course, especially if they attempt to turn right, because they do not have time to react.

Meanwhile, the investigations of the Nicosia Traffic Police into the fatal crash on Larnaca Avenue in Aglantzia with the victim being 20-year-old Kyriakos Antoniou from Agios Dometios, continue in order to scientifically document that one driver was moving at increased speed. The brutality of the collision, as mentioned to us, is a given, hence the huge damage to the two vehicles involved, but this must also be scientifically proven by the examinations that are being done, the representation and other data. Another fact that the Traffic Police counts for the circumstances of the fatal accident is that the 20-year-old's vehicle was attempting to turn right. As it was announced, the car driven by Antoniou, on Larnakos Avenue in Aglantzia, in the direction from the Panepistimiou roundabout to Nicosia, under conditions that are being investigated, at some point on the road, collided with a car, driven by a 24-year-old, having a 23-year-old as a passenger. From the tests that were done, the traffic lights at that time were in the green, which is why the issue of speed remains to be clarified. It is for this reason that to date no other moves have been made by the Traffic Police, since the fatal one is still being examined. It was also clarified that at that time there were no fights and none of the vehicles involved participated in a race.

As we were told by the Traffic Police, as soon as the examinations are completed, the file of the fatal accident will be put before the Legal Service to decide what actions should be taken.
