CRIME ROUND UP

 Pafos Live 26 August 2025

Contractors and subcontractors of construction works complain that lately properties of thousands of euros, tools necessary for their work, change hands overnight. Thefts of building necessities, scaffolding, slabs and other objects are almost the order of the day.

The perpetrators remove them from storage areas, even from construction sites, and resell them at humiliating prices or transport them for recycling. Their benefit in choosing recycling is not great and they prefer to find buyers, even in other provinces.

The police have made arrests and brought some to justice, but the phenomenon continues to take on dimensions due to the high demand that exists due to the building development.

Turkey was looking for a Turkish citizen, of Kurdish origin, who had resided for a number of years in the occupied territories and was finally located at the Red Notice base, which was transferred to Interpol, in a barricade by police officers of the Republic.

The Kurd was detained until August 22 when the case was set after the Turkish authorities were notified of his arrest, but no document from the occupying country was sent to the Cypriot authorities – since he does not recognize the Republic of Cyprus – and so he was released.

Information from "F" states that despite Turkey's notification of the arrest of the wanted person, he did not respond to it and the Court ordered his release. The authorities of the Republic began procedures for the issuance of an arrest and deportation warrant, because he was here illegally, but he submitted a request for political asylum. The examination is pending and no further actions will be taken before a conclusion is reached.

As stated in a recent decision of the Court of Appeal, it is attributed to him that he transferred money to a terrorist organization – as the PKK/CCP is called by Turkey – while allegedly taking part in financial transactions by providing support to the organization, according to orders from his superiors. He was arrested on 26.07.2025 at the Deryneia barricade, coming from the free areas. During the inspection, it was found that a Red Notice was pending against him.

According to his lawyer Laris Vrahimis, he has never committed the crimes that are attributed to him, he has lived for 24 years in the occupied areas, he has never been arrested, he works as a builder and he has two minor children.

At the time, he had supported a request not to be detained since there is no risk of escape, because he knows that if he goes to Turkey he will be tried. However, the Court had ordered his detention until August 22. In view of not sending evidence justifying his extradition to Turkey, he was released. The intention of the authorities now is that if his request for political asylum is rejected, he will be deported.

In the meantime, as far as the other Kurdish Kenan Ayaz is concerned, everything is ready and the notification from Germany is expected to be sent to Cyprus where he will serve the remainder of his sentence.
