The 36-year-old man wanted by the Israel Police in the context of an investigation into a death ambush in the city of "Ashdod" that occurred on 24/3/2024 was handed over by UNFICYP to the authorities of the Republic of Cyprus.

We are talking about Daniel Yehonatan Zarug, who was arrested on July 30 in Kyrenia.

The efforts of the "administration" of the occupied territories to hand him over to the Cypriot authorities through the bi-communal group had been revealed by "F" in a front-page article last Monday. The day before yesterday, therefore, the handover process was completed through a barricade and the procedures for extradition of the suspect to Israel have already begun.

We remind you that, as we had written on Monday, information indicates that actions had been taken by the United States for the arrest of Zarug, while the Israeli Police were also aware that the wanted man was hiding in the occupied areas.

The scenario of his surrender to the Republic of Cyprus was also convenient for Ankara's policy, which criticizes Benjamin Netanyahu for the situation in the Middle East, but is not willing to go to extremes when it comes to its relations with Israel.

For Zarug, the Israeli authorities had issued a "red notice" through Interpol. According to the website Mako, which belongs to an Israeli news group, the 36-year-old is suspected of murdering a woman and injuring two other people.

The perpetrator of the crime set up a death cart for Shaul Peretz on 24/3/2024 in Ashdod, who was going with his family to a court hearing. He shot nine times, killing, however, Shaul's wife, Almog Peretz. The assailant injured Shaul and another woman.

Zarug reportedly left Israel in March 2024, shortly after the aforementioned crime. He was using a fake Spanish passport named Andros Garcia.

The President of the United Cyprus Party (KK), Izet Izjan, and the Turkish Cypriot trade unionist Sener Eljil described the proceedings in the "military court" in the occupied territories against the five illegally arrested Greek Cypriots as a "rigged trial" and a "blackmail" process, which aims to incriminate innocent people and intimidate the voices in favour of peace and a solution. The two Turkish Cypriot activists followed today's process and in their statements, after the decision to postpone it, they denounced the regime's manipulations, expressing their full support to the five Greek Cypriots.

Izet Izjan: "A rigged game that hurt the conscience of all of us"

The President of the United Cyprus Party, Izzet Izjan, spoke of a "rigged trial" that aims to fabricate guilty people and legitimize the regime itself.

"The regime in northern Cyprus is trying to justify itself by creating guilty, fabricating evidence and forcing people to accept their guilt," he said. According to Mr. Izjan, the five Greek Cypriots were essentially told that "if you admit your guilt, your release will be accelerated. But if you ask for a normal trial, this process will drag on for months."

Mr. Izjan stressed that this case "has wounded the conscience not only of Greek Cypriots, but also of Turkish Cypriots who are in favor of peace, solution and rapprochement. It has hurt all of us."

He added that this is a "rigged game" that seems to continue, with the aim of being used as an "element of blackmail" and as an "attempt to intimidate, silence and bend the sections of society that are in favor of solution, peace and normalization."

"We will continue to be on the side of innocent people, Cypriots, human rights and freedom," he concluded, expressing his party's full support for the five Greek Cypriots.

Sener Eljil: "The 5 Greek Cypriots are being used as hostages in a blackmail process"

For his part, Turkish Cypriot activist Sener Eljil said that the regime is trying to create evidence of the accusations, essentially blackmailing the five Greek Cypriots.

"The last suggestion made to these people was: 'Admit your crime so that we can set you free.' Otherwise, the trial will be extended until the end of September. We are facing a situation full of blackmail," he said.

"They are trying to incriminate innocent people," Mr. Elzil continued, adding: "We believe that these people are being used as hostages from the beginning. That is why we stand and will continue to stand by their side."

The Turkish Cypriot trade unionist stressed that the root of the problem is obvious. "The aim is for the north of the island to remain an area under occupation, under the control of Turkey. The continuation of this illegality and its acceptance by the people is sought," he said.

Finally, he described the treatment of the five Greek Cypriots as "torture in this heat" and assured that they will continue to stand by them and support solidarity between the two communities.

The Larnaca Police is placed on red alert by the now uncontrollable action of organized crime, which is believed to be linked to at least five very serious criminal actions in a period of just one month. From July 14 until today (15/8) three murder attempts were committed, shots were fired at a 25-year-old's vehicle, while at dawn unknown persons set fire to the car of a 42-year-old.

According to information from Filenews from police sources, there are indications that the criminal actions in the last 24 hours may be connected. These are the attempted murder against a security guard and the arson of four cars in a car rental company in Pyla and the arson of a car used by a 42-year-old man in Aradippou. The examinations are also directed to the Central Prisons, in which investigations were carried out yesterday. The investigators of the Larnaca TAE are investigating whether the previous criminal actions are connected to each other, while, according to the same sources, specific measures have been taken, in an attempt to put a barrier to the action of organized crime, which "woke up" on the night of Larnaca.

The perpetrators of the new criminal act struck at 3:30 in the morning setting fire to a car outside a house in Aradippou, which, as it was found in the process, is used by the 42-year-old. The fire was extinguished by the Fire Service and caused extensive damage to the vehicle. Preliminary examinations revealed that it was a malicious action, since traces of flammable material were detected. A closed circuit surveillance was received from the area to see if the movements of the perpetrators were recorded.

Exactly twenty-four hours earlier, the other criminal act was committed against the company in Pyla. According to testimony obtained by the Police, a vehicle approached the company's premises and two people got out of it. One of them was holding a pistol, while the second was a bottle with flammable material. The gunman fired a shot at the security guard, who was inside the company's offices, with the bullet ending up in an adjacent column next to him. Then, under the threat of a pistol, the perpetrator pinned him to the ground, while the second person covered four vehicles with flammable material and then set fire. Two fire trucks rushed to the scene and extinguished the fire, which caused extensive damage to the front of the four vehicles. A closed surveillance circuit was also received from the premises that recorded the movements of the perpetrators, who had their faces covered.

It is recalled that on August 8 there was a new mobilization of the Police, when shots were fired at the vehicle of a 25-year-old woman in Oroklini, which were believed to be a message to her partner, who is known to the authorities. At 11 a.m. on July 31, an attempted murder was committed targeting a 47-year-old man in the Industrial Area of Dromolaxia. The 47-year-old, who was not injured, alerted the Police on his own, stating that while he was riding a bicycle in the area, he heard shots coming from behind him, coming from a stranger who was riding a moped. The unknown man allegedly escaped on foot and left behind the scooter he was driving. Meanwhile, on July 14, another assassination attempt was committed targeting a 49-year-old man in Pyla. The victim was shot as soon as he got out of a vehicle, in which his partner and her 12-year-old daughter were riding. He had been wounded in the leg by the shots.

So far, however, all five criminal actions remain unsolved.
