Cyprus has declared a red alert for wildfire risk for today, Saturday, 26 July 2025, as authorities warn the public of severe penalties for causing fires.
The Department of Forests said the risk of wildfire outbreak and spread will be at “red alert” level, according to a Friday announcement.
The department emphasised that causing fires constitutes an offence under the Forests Law and the Prevention and Suppression of Fires in the Countryside Law, which carries strict penalties.
Authorities issued an urgent appeal to the public to exercise particular caution during outdoor activities, completely avoiding actions that could potentially cause fires.
The Department of Forests advised anyone who spots smoke or fire to immediately telephone 1407 for the Department of Forests or 112 for the Fire Service.
The warning comes as Cyprus continues to recover from what has been described as the worst wildfire in the island’s history, which claimed two lives and destroyed more than 120 square kilometres of forest and agricultural land.
