NEW DECREE OF IOANNOU FOR THE STORAGE OF RES WITHOUT A NEW URBAN PLANNING PERMIT - MORE THAN DOUBLE THE AREA

Filenews 12 July 2025 - by Chrysanthos Manoli

With a new decree published yesterday, July 11, 2025, the Minister of the Interior, Konstantinos Ioannou, doubles the area of green energy storage systems that can be installed in existing RES parks without the need for a new urban planning permit for batteries.

The minister had issued such a decree last May, allowing the installation without a new planning permit of a storage system with an area of no more than 20 square meters and a height of up to 3 meters.

With the new decree published yesterday, the area is increased to 50 sq.m. The height remains at 3 meters.

The change had been requested by producers from renewable energy sources in order to speed up the procedures for installing batteries in existing commercial parks.

A necessary prerequisite for the relaxation granted to apply is the existence of all the necessary permits for RES parks to which a storage system will be added.

The energy storage system must be installed within the plot on which a permit has been granted for a renewable electricity generation project and the terms of the planning permit have been complied with, if it has
been implemented.

The energy storage system shall not affect the formation, opening or widening of an interurban road, motorway or primary artery. It should also not alter the topography and/or altitudes of the natural soil and be integrated into the environment.

The energy storage system must be at least 6 m away from the boundaries of the plot.
