MONI - THE GRADUAL OPERATION OF THE MOBILE DESALINATION PLANTS BEGINS

 Filenews 22 July 2025

Final tests are being carried out as of yesterday, Monday, at the 13 mobile desalination units, located in the Moni area, while later on Tuesday the first one is expected to be put into operation, to be followed by the gradual operation of the others, said the deputy director of the TAY, Giorgos Kazantzis.

As Mr. Kazantzis said, "all our crews are on and continue the tests since yesterday together with the technicians of the company that has built the units and we believe that by the afternoon the operation of the units will begin, but we will be able to confirm this later".

Specifically, as he explained, the operation of one unit will be tested initially and if no problem occurs, a second unit will be tested, while if everything goes well, he noted, a 3rd unit may also work today.

"The technicians of the construction company, from the UAE, a chief engineer and two technicians, are here, for about 15 days, for the period of their operation and to see that everything is going well," he said and expressed hope that all 13 units will be put into operation in the next 5-6 days, without problems.

At the same time, Giorgos Kazantzis clarified that the water produced by the mobile desalination plants will not be used for the needs of Limassol, but will be transferred to the southern pipeline and will be channelled to the Districts of Nicosia, Larnaca and Famagusta, which currently receive quantities of water from the Kouris dam.

In this way, he continued, "we are reducing the water supply, from Kouris to the three Districts, and more water remains from the dam for Limassol" while noting that, if necessary, there is the possibility of transporting desalinated water to Limassol.

Asked about this, the deputy director of the TAY said that the installation of the mobile desalination units was an "extremely complex process, which took place in a very limited time, with very close cooperation with both the contractor and the staff of the TAY and with the EAC, which tried, in a very short period of time, to electrify the units".

He also noted that boreholes have been put into operation in Kouris and it is expected that today or within the next few days, the water produced will be received by the Limassol EDA.
