MONI DESALINATION - 6 OUT OF 13 UNITS ARE IN OPERATION - AIM FOR ALL TO BE OPERATIONAL BY END OF THE WEEK - includes update on Paphos unit

 Filenews 31 July 2025

Six of the total of 13 mobile desalination plants in Moni are already in operation, with the aim of putting them all into full operation by the end of the week.

Their activation was delayed due to technical problems faced by the manufacturer's specialized technicians from the United Arab Emirates. At the moment, six units are operating steadily, while two others are in the trial stage. The rest are expected to be put into operation gradually in the coming days.

The problems are mainly related to the automation of the modules and their software, as well as technical issues that occurred during the activation process. Despite the difficulties, the process is progressing, albeit at a slower pace than originally planned.

Each unit has the capacity to produce about 1,000 cubic meters of water per day, with the water produced already being channelled to the southern pipeline, serving needs in the districts of Nicosia, Larnaca and Famagusta. This provision provides the opportunity to save stocks from the Kouris dam, to cover the Limassol District.

As far as Paphos is concerned, the first mobile unit is operating on a trial basis, but the desired water quality for channelling to the network has not yet been achieved. Its integration is expected within the next few days, while a second unit will start testing on Monday. The largest units are scheduled to be operational in September.

In relation to the fire-affected areas of mountainous Limassol, crews of the Water Development Department are in the area on a daily basis, providing technical support or even though these areas do not fall directly under its responsibility. Although there is water supply from the first days, there are problems in the pipelines, mainly due to damage from fires or increased pressure on the network.

It is noted that the deputy director of the TAY, Giorgos Kazantzis, is leaving his position today and from tomorrow the Senior Executive Engineer Elena Finikaridou assumes duties.
