Not all the crimes "that we have seen in the last few days, are crimes related to organized crime," said the Minister of Justice and Public Order, Marios Hartsiotis, noting that there are crimes related to broader social problems that should be evaluated with the cooperation of all co-competent bodies.
The Chief of Police, Themistos Arnaoutis, for his part, said that the Police responds immediately, which is why they have had several investigations lately, while regarding juvenile delinquency, he pointed out that it is not only in Larnaca that the Police focuses its attention, it is all over Cyprus.
Asked to comment on the rise in crime, murders, juvenile delinquency, the Minister of Justice and Public Order, Marios Hartsiotis, said that there is indeed an upsurge, something that is not a phenomenon these days and in the past there has been an upsurge from time to time.
"Not all the crimes we see in the last few days are crimes related to organized crime. There are crimes, which we will see have some social implications, if I may say so, or some extensions that relate to broader social problems and issues that concern society, and therefore these issues are the ones that must be evaluated with the cooperation of all the other competent Ministries, Bodies and Departments, of course, the Police, in order to make a better assessment of these causes that we have reached in these crimes so that we can give more effective methods and solutions to the greatest possible extent," he added.
In his intervention, the Chief of Police, Themistos Arnaoutis, said that in recent days we have had serious episodes of domestic violence, which is why we have had some deaths or attempts.
"We had personal differences in some cases for various reasons and we may have some other issues, which we cannot say at this stage," he said.
He assured that "the Police are responding immediately, which is why we have had several investigations lately".
"As far as juvenile delinquency is concerned, and obviously you are referring to Larnaca, it is not only in Larnaca that the Police are focusing their attention, it is all over Cyprus," he noted.
The Chief of Police said, at the same time, that there is a constant differentiation in the business plans they have.
"Certainly with the intervention of the President of the Republic last Friday for Larnaca, because there is this concern and especially from the Mayor of Larnaca, whom we have seen several times, and yes, in the last few days and I emphasize not only in Larnaca, there were several arrests, there were several issues, which the Police continue to respond to," Added.
"It is not only the intervention of the President of the Republic, it is the continuous presence of the Police, but I say, yes, in Larnaca and it continues and will continue throughout Cyprus," he concluded.
