ERATOSTHENES - ARRIVAL OF THE INNOVATIVE SATELLITE DATA RECEPTION ANTENNA

 Pafos Live 3 July 2025

Arrived at Limassol Port, Antenna of the Data Acquisition Station (DAS).

The Earth Observation satellite data receiving antenna is an advanced system used to receive data from satellites that collect information about the Earth. This infrastructure is a key tool for observing the Earth from space.

The antenna will be installed at CYTA's premises, marking the culmination of a multi-year effort and coordinated work by the ERATOSTHENI Centre of Excellence, based in Limassol.

The installation was implemented with funding of 3.9 million euros, through the flagship European program EXCELSIOR of Horizon 2020 (Teaming), with the contribution of the Republic of Cyprus. The program is implemented by the Cyprus University of Technology (CUT), within the framework of which the ERATOSTHENIS Center of Excellence was established.

This Satellite Station has unique features, as it allows the simultaneous reception of data from three different frequency bands by low-orbit satellites. This important infrastructure covers the needs not only of Cyprus, but also of the wider region of the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East, enhancing existing and future satellite missions.

In practice, this translates into the immediate availability of satellite data in near real-time, contributing to the effective response to critical issues such as natural disasters, maritime surveillance and climate monitoring.

The possibility of extended coverage, high definition and speed of data acquisition make satellite remote sensing a particularly powerful and economically viable tool for Earth observation.

We warmly invite you to publicize this important milestone for science, innovation and technology in Cyprus. Below are related videos for TV coverage.
