CRIME ROUND UP

 Pafos Live 5 July 2025

The customs department has recently seized thousands of pieces of clothing and accessories (watches, glasses, hats, bags, wallets, etc.) from successive businesses in Paphos, which were sold on the market to mislead consumers as authentic.

The Customs Department once again appeals to the public to be particularly careful when purchasing products, since there are thousands of products on the market that are not authentic and therefore do not meet the specifications of the products in relation to the brand they copy. In general, we should know that counterfeit products:

· They are produced in miserable conditions and using forced labour, often children.

· They are dangerous or harmful to human health and safety, with some of them even causing death.

· The proceeds of the counterfeit trade are used in most cases to finance organised crime and terrorism.

A 38-year-old wanted man from Jordan was released on parole yesterday by the Paphos District Court. The Paphos District Court dealt with the application for the extradition of a 38-year-old person to the Hamesite Kingdom of Jordan in order to serve a sentence that had been imposed on him in absentia for the offence of premeditated murder.

The lawyer of the 38-year-old, Ilias Satolias, objected to the further detention of his client due to, as he said, a delay by the Cypriot authorities in order to obtain the necessary authorization. The Court set July 23, 2025 as the date for the Republic to forward the extradition request.

Therefore, the 38-year-old was released on parole until the next trial.

Filenews

The Police draws the attention of citizens after successive complaints about fraud attempts through phone calls, by persons who falsely pretend to be employees of Social Insurance.

According to reports, the scammers allegedly claim a refund of money from pensions and ask victims to confirm their bank details. For this purpose, they send an electronic link through which unsuspecting citizens are asked to register sensitive personal data.

In at least one confirmed case, a citizen was seduced by the perpetrators, followed the instructions given to him and suffered financial damage of  €16,000.

The authorities note that other fraud attempts have been recorded, which fortunately were not completed, thanks to the immediate reaction of citizens. Everyone is urged to be extra careful and not to share personal or banking information with strangers.

Tips for your protection:

NEVER provide bank account details, passwords or other personal data over the phone, even if the interlocutor presents himself as an employee of a government or other agency.

Social Security will never ask for confirmation or updating of bank details by phone or message.

DO NOT select or follow links sent to you from unknown or suspicious sources.

If you receive such a call, record the number, stop communication and immediately inform the authorities.

Inform relatives and friends, especially with older people, so that they are informed and do not fall victim to such scams.

Everyone's vigilance is the most effective measure to prevent and deal with these phenomena.

The other three suspects detained by the Police are brought to Court again today in connection with the alleged ring with a mastermind of a barrister who was trafficking huge sums of money.

After the renewal of the detention of her parents and brother the day before yesterday, today a Court in Nicosia will request the renewal of the detention of the 37-year-old businesswoman and socialite, her boyfriend and a 40-year-old man. Information from "F" states that important evidence has emerged in three directions, which will be invoked by the Police in order to request another eight days of detention for the three.

These are data that came from telecommunications data from the opening of the mobile phones of all six suspects, about the origin of €238,000 in a safe in the name of the 37-year-old and the investigations in an accounting office that kept the accounts of the goldsmith's shop and the beauty salon of the 37-year-old.

From the opening of the phones, an exchange of messages between the people involved emerges that shows the nature of the relationships they had, especially the 37-year-old with the victim and the victim with the mother of his friend. As it was said the day before yesterday in Court by the investigator of the case, it seems that there has recently been a rupture in the relationship between the convict and the mother of the 37-year-old, which is why he was asking for the money he allegedly gave.

Another element that emerges from the interrogations is the origin of the €545,000 withheld by the Police. Provided that the 37-year-old respects the right to silence and does not give explanations, investigators will look for other ways to identify the sources of the money. There is evidence that a travel bag with €83,000 found in her brother's apartment was placed by the suspect. As long as he does not give an explanation about their origin, all possibilities will be examined. Also, the €238,000 found in a safe is frozen until it is clarified whether it is the product of legal income or illegal.

The investigators of the TAE Headquarters, with the help of the Financial Crime Prosecution Office, will dig up the accounting program that had been installed in the family's goldsmith's shop in order to show in the last six months after the transactions with the convict began, whether the actions they show were real and justified by previous periods. They also open computers to see if there are any electronic conversations or other evidence relating to the case under consideration.

The work of the investigators is long and difficult since several data will be examined and an attempt will be made to investigate them. The convict's mobile phone and whether he had an English number as well as the receiver receiving a signal are also examined. Everything is under the microscope of the authorities, while as it emerged the day before yesterday, the 37-year-old's family wishes to separate her from her case and the case of the barrister, which is why they have different lawyers.
