The Police are considering the possibility that the motives of the perpetrators of the attack on the 33-year-old are related to financial issues. More specifically, information tells us that the action of the three is attributed to their attempt to collect an amount of money.  The same information states that on the basis of testimony it may be a case of usury.

The Police were informed about the incident a little later, around 23:30 on Saturday, while members of the Force rushed to the scene in order to deal with the incident. Although the victim of the attack was stabbed multiple times, as it was found after he was transferred to the Accident and Emergency Department of the Nicosia General Hospital, however, the information about his condition is reassuring.

There is no end to the tragic living conditions of dozens of dogs in a house in Limassol, which are owned by a 77-year-old owner, who is already accused of animal abuse.

The new visit made today by volunteer Kyveli Georgiou, a member of an animal welfare organization, is disgusting, with her describing the conditions as "hell". As she says in a relevant post, "unfortunately, what I saw today was even worse".

33 dogs were found in the house, of which 9 were confiscated, with the volunteer taking care of 4 of them (the mother and her 3 newborns), while another 5 dogs were hosted by another organization.

"A mother with 3 newborns trembling, some with tumours, others skeletonized. Of course, everything without any medical history and without being neutered. I ask everyone to help so that these creatures are saved and this hell is closed once and for all," the volunteer noted.

It is worth mentioning that all the bodies involved intend to proceed with the complete confiscation of the dogs in the possession of the elderly woman.

As filenews had reported in a previous publication, the mobilization of the competent services took place after complaints from several neighbours of the 77-year-old.

The spokeswoman of the Crime Prevention Bureau of the Police Headquarters, to which the Animal Police belongs, Nikoleta Tyrimou, told filenews that the owner had about 60 dogs in her possession.

"The day before yesterday, 5 were confiscated, today another 9, while tomorrow another 10 are expected to be confiscated. In addition, another 25 dogs of the same are already housed in a shelter," she said, stressing that everyone must assume their responsibilities.

"Municipalities and communities must effectively implement the Dog Law, carry out regular and rigorous checks, register dogs and ensure that they are registered and microchipped. It is not possible to have 60 dogs in one house," he underlined.

He also pointed out that the issue is huge and serious and must be put before the Parliament, in order to consider the possibility of institutionalizing a restriction on the number of animals that a citizen can keep. He stressed that animal welfare is not only a legal issue, but mainly a matter of education and culture.

Despite the efforts made, animal abuse and neglect remains at alarming levels, with complaints being a daily occurrence.

"Owning an animal entails responsibilities. Respect, care and proper living conditions," he concluded.

Finally, it is noted that huge efforts are made every day to find places to accommodate stray animals, as most shelters are overcrowded.

A 53-year-old and his wife are now facing justice, in connection with the attack – and specifically the knife injury – against a 30-year-old, which was committed on July 12 outside a supermarket in Pissouri. The investigators of the Limassol District Court brought both the 53-year-old and his wife before the Limassol District Court yesterday morning, where a criminal case was registered against them.

The two defendants are now facing the charge of acts aimed at causing grievous bodily harm. After signing bail, they were released on bail and the case was set for hearing on September 19.

It should be noted that the wife of the 53-year-old was not initially accused in the case. However, the investigators obtained testimony according to which she allegedly took part in the bloody episode, with the 30-year-old as a victim.

As Filenews had written in a previous publication, both the Police and the community of Pissouri were aware of the "open front" and the chronic conflict between the two fellow villagers, which – as everything seemed to indicate – would sooner or later end in a bloody episode.

It is recalled that after the incident outside the supermarket in Pissouri, the 53-year-old left the scene with his wife. Later, he contacted a member of the Pissouri Police Station, stating that he was injured and that he was transferred to the Limassol General Hospital for examination. In addition, he claimed that the 30-year-old attacked him first, holding a knife, and that he acted to protect his wife, who was present at the incident.

The fifth person was found guilty of securing registration with false representations. The case was revealed on January 29, 2024 following a simultaneous European operation by Cyprus, Portugal and Latvia, codenamed "Operational Task Force Limassol. The information to the Cypriot authorities was received in November 2020 and after many months of investigations, it was revealed that women, as well as men from Portugal and Latvia, were traveling to Cyprus and performing sham marriages with foreigners, in order to secure a residence permit in the Republic and then travel to other European countries.

The driver of a twin-cabin pickup truck, who was found guilty of manslaughter on July 2, after his actions on the road were found to have caused the New Year accident that killed four people, has appealed the ruling.

Apart from manslaughter, the court found the accused guilty of speeding.

Defence lawyer Lambros Pieri, while advocating for mitigation on Monday, announced that he had appealed the ruling.

As mitigation of sentence factors, Pieri said inter alia that his client had not consumed alcohol or used drugs.

Pieri said the accused, who had been in Cyprus for 15 years, had not violated any traffic laws and had sincerely regretted causing the accident, which he admitted to right from the beginning.

The sentence will be announced at the end of the month.

Pieri asked that the penalties not be consecutive.

Politis reported that the appeal is based on a series of reasons, one of which is the question whether or not the accused had braked and if the ABS system would leave marks.

Pieri said it had also identified contradictions in testimonies and that the court had not taken into account any of the scientific articles presented by the defence.

During the trial, the accused had admitted to reckless and dangerous driving and to jumping a red light.

The accident occurred at the intersection of Ayia Anastasia and Yiannis Kranidiotis street, near Polemidia, Limassol.

The four victims of the fatal crash were 27-year-old Vathoula Georgiou, 17-year-old Nikolas Georgiou, their 73-year-old grandfather Nikolas Zavrou and 74-year-old grandmother Evanthia Georgiou.

Twenty-seven-year-old Georgiou was driving her grandparents back home after the New Year, when having almost completed a right turn at the intersection her vehicle was struck by the 44-year-old.

The victims died upon impact while the fire service had to be called to remove them from the vehicle.

The court heard that the 44-year-old was driving at a speed twice the 50km/hour limit.

It said in its ruling that his vehicle “acted as a bullet that had been released from the gun and was moving towards its target, namely any other vehicle which, at that particular moment, was legally turning right to enter Ayia Anastasia street, as was the vehicle of the victims.”
