BRITISH BASES - NEW POLICY TO PROTECT THE LADY'S MILE - TRAINED POLICE PATROLS ALL SUMMER

 Filenews 1 July 2025

A new policy outlining its basic principles for the protection of the environment and the well-being of all beach visitors has been implemented by the British Bases Authority (SBAA).

During the peak season, 100,000 visitors per week are expected at Lady's Mile Beach and as a result there are some environmental and legal risks.

It adds that illegal construction, waste and theft are just some of the issues affecting the ecosystem in popular spots such as the Lady's Mile and the beach in Kourion and the new policy confirms the commitment of the SBAA to ensure the safety and well-being of all residents and visitors.

The policy was published after consultation with the Municipalities of Curium and Limassol and other key stakeholders, including NGOs.

The policy states that law enforcement will remain one of the key priorities for this summer, with trained police officers patrolling the area to cultivate a culture of responsibility, accountability and respect for the environment.

BB Civilian Commander George Kiteos said that "law enforcement officers patrol beaches to safeguard public health and safety, including hygiene, food safety and emergency preparedness. They will also be available to ensure compliance with environmental regulations to protect natural resources, ecosystems and biodiversity."

Kiteos explained that "quality of life, dealing with noise pollution complaints, parking violations and other issues that affect the well-being and tranquility of residents and visitors will also be among the priorities of our policy. As well as responsible business practices and ensuring compliance with land use regulations, zoning provisions and development permits to promote proportional development and maintaining safety."

The policy highlights education as one of the most powerful tools to ensure the good maintenance of the area.

As in previous years, awareness campaigns will aim to "promote compliance and cultivate a culture of responsibility and accountability," he said.

Those who violate the regulations will face various sanctions, from simple warnings, out-of-court or even criminal prosecution for serious offenses.

Holidaymakers will also notice an increased presence of BB Police on land and at sea on weekends and holidays.

Business Control Vehicle will also operate on the beach of Lady's Mile, according to Deputy Senior Lieutenant Antonis Demetriou.

He said: "BB Police is committed to maximising the safety of all visitors to the Lady's Mile and Curium beach areas, ensuring that a safe environment is created for all. Our officers as well as the collaborating agencies will also distribute various leaflets to the public to highlight potential risks, related to road and beach safety, crime prevention and of course environmental protection."

Dubbed "Operation Guardian," the Deputy Senior Lieutenant continued, "it will fulfil our core responsibilities in a manner that is compatible with our code of conduct. We hope that everyone will enjoy the summer season and stay safe."
