The Cyprus Ports Authority has activated environmental management protocols following the detection of petroleum contamination from an inactive submarine pipeline in the sea off Moni.
The leak was discovered on Saturday, 12 July 2025, by the Department of Fisheries and Marine Research, which conducted initial intervention measures.
The ports authority immediately implemented environmental management protocols and assigned a licensed company to execute anti-pollution measures to contain the contamination.
According to a press release, restoration work at the leak site has been initiated, whilst the authority is making formal representations to the pipeline’s owner company, demanding it assume exclusive responsibility including complete dismantling and removal of the pipeline.
The authority stated it is taking all necessary actions to protect the marine environment and prevent similar incidents in future.
The incident originated from an inactive submarine pipeline in the Moni maritime area, according to the official statement. The ports authority said it contacted the owner company, setting out requirements for pipeline dismantling and removal.
Anti-pollution measures through licensed contractors continue.
