In Limassol, it seems that they have been fooled by driving vehicles without them bearing registration plates, compared to other areas of Cyprus where the phenomenon exists but not to the extent that it occurs in Limassol.
The issue of pickaxe driving is currently on the agenda of the Parliamentary Committee on Transport, following a proposal for a Law submitted by the Chairman of the Committee, Mr. Marinos Mousouttas.
Mr. Mousiouttas, asked about this by Filenews, said that relevant information was put before him about the uncontrolled circulation of vehicles without license plates, which is why he submitted the relevant Law proposal. As he said, it is not only a matter of losing money from the state (e.g. when a vehicle registration is not issued) but also a matter of preventing possible crimes and solving them when they are used to commit a crime or when they are involved in a road accident etc.
Responding to a relevant question by Filenews, Mr. Mousiouttas said that the biggest problem with the circulation of vehicles without license plates seems to be located in Limassol for reasons that he does not know.
In the explanatory memorandum accompanying the Law proposal, it is stated that its purpose is to amend the Law on the Out-of-Court Regulation of Offences, in order to increase the extrajudicial fine for the offence involving vehicles that are on the road network and which do not have registration plates.
In particular, the proposed regulation is deemed necessary for the purposes of tightening the existing legislative framework and combating the phenomenon of the use of vehicles on the road network that do not carry registration plates.
The purpose of the proposed law is to amend the Law on the Out-of-Court Regulation of Offences, in order to increase the extrajudicial fine for the offence involving vehicles that are on the road network and which do not have registration plates.
Based on the proposed law, owners/drivers of vehicles that are used without registration plates are fined €500. The same applies to vehicles parked in a public area.
