The fire that broke out in the "Horteri" area between the communities of Argaka and Pelathousa and which threatened the forest of Paphos was extinguished late yesterday afternoon.
In the battle to extinguish it, strong ground and air firefighting forces had been thrown in. Five aircraft owned or leased by the republic and a total of 15 manned fire trucks from the Fire Service and the Forestry Department were used, along with two land pushers.
The fire broke out around five in the afternoon and two hours later it was fully controlled. Ground firefighting forces remained on alert in the area during the night, ready to intervene in case of a resurgence. Four more fires broke out yesterday in the Paphos district. Near the monastery of the Cross of Minthi, in Peyia, in Episkopi and in the area between Drousia and Prodromi. All were quickly extinguished.
