Three new fraud incidents have recently occurred in Paphos, with unsuspecting citizens as victims who received a phone call from unknown persons, with a Greek accent, who told them that they needed their personal information and credit card numbers to transfer money to which they are entitled as a Social Security refund.

The last complaint was made on Monday, June 16, at the Paphos Police Station, while two others preceded it on April 30, 2025, securing the amount of €1000 , and last Saturday, June 14, 2025, securing the amount of €2100 .

According to the complaint, the perpetrator calls the potential victims and tells them that they have a refund, convincing them to provide their card details supposedly to be credited with the amount, and ultimately defrauds them.

This is a new "discovery" in the series of methods used since it is good to remember that some others are:

  • Updating Bank Account Information
  • Unpaid court fees using a link and
  • Redeeming points at gas stations through the rewards system –

The Police recommend for the umpteenth time that the public be particularly careful and not give out their details in telephone conversations because they may fall victim to fraud.

It is good, it is noted, that in addition to each of us being suspicious, we should also inform our relatives, especially those who are older, to avoid such unpleasant "surprises".

Nightmarish moments were experienced by the residents of the area where the fire broke out in the early hours of Friday in the parking lot of an apartment building in Agia Fyla in Limassol. Terrified, they listened to the explosions, not knowing where the fire came from.

As a resident of the apartment building told Filenews, "I woke up to the smell of smoke". He notes that just 20 days ago he rented his apartment, while his vehicle was completely destroyed due to the fire.

At the same time, according to information from Filenews, the authorities have put under their microscope that an improvised incendiary object may have been placed in the vehicle that was targeted and from which the fire started. Specifically, a bottle with flammable material seems to have been placed, which was wrapped in a firecracker.

Specifically, around 2:20 a.m., information was received about a fire in a vehicle in the underground parking lot of the apartment building, while explosions were also heard. The apartment building was evacuated immediately, while no injuries were reported. Both the members of the Fire Service, who extinguished the fire, and the members of the Police Force, rushed to the scene immediately.

As reported by Lefteris Kyriakou, Assistant Police Director of Limassol, the fire started from a specific vehicle and spread to the others. The fire caused the complete destruction of five vehicles, while two more were damaged. In addition, damage was also recorded in parts of the building.

According to him, the examinations are continuing by the competent authorities, and the closed circuits are expected to be checked, Mr. Kyriakou noted. To a journalist's question, was flammable material detected? "Testimonies have also been taken to ascertain the causes."

The causes of the fire are under investigation, while the examinations are continuing by the Limassol TAE.

The investigations of the Limassol TAE are on a very good path in relation to the bombing of a beer hall, but also the placement of a bomb in the vehicle of a 26-year-old man in Agios Ioannis, who is a friendly person of the manager of the pub.

In addition to the minors who are already in custody for the bomb in the beer hall, the robbery in a bakery and the theft of a vehicle, it seems that the authorities have also reached the person who allegedly paid some of the minors for the placement of the explosive devices.

Specifically, the investigators of the Limassol TAE proceeded this morning, with a court warrant, to the arrest of a 23-year-old - a person known to the Authorities, as he had engaged the Police a few years ago with a very serious criminal act. The suspect was brought on Thursday morning (19/6) before the Limassol Court, which approved his detention for a period of six days.

According to valid information from Filenews, the investigators secured written testimony, in which the 23-year-old is allegedly the person who paid for the placement of the explosive objects. The same information states that one of the minors had undertaken to plant the bombs and would receive the sum of €500 for the bomb in the pub and €200 for the bomb in the 26-year-old's vehicle. After a second minor was informed, the two allegedly received the amount of €350 as a deposit.

The events that followed are already known from the detention of the four minors. First, they stole a vehicle and then planted the bomb in the pub. According to the same information, their plan was to place the bomb in the 26-year-old's vehicle on the same day they would hit the pub. However, this went wrong, as they seem to have been noticed and did not have time to plant the bomb due to the time. So, they put their plan into action the next day (30/5).

From the examinations and testimonies obtained, two of the four minors, who are in custody, went on a motorcycle outside the 26-year-old's residence, where they placed the explosive device. In fact, in their first attempt there was no explosion, as a result of which they returned and detonated again.

For the bombing of the 26-year-old's vehicle, two of the minors already detained for the case of the beer hall and the other two criminal actions are expected to be arrested again.

However, under the microscope of the investigative team of the Limassol TAE the scenario of a vendetta and a cycle of retaliation between specific persons has been put under the microscope of the Limassol TAE from the beginning. All this takes place in the wake of the operation of the YKAN in a café in Zakaki, where a quantity of drugs and a large amount of money were found. This was followed by bomb attacks on the pub and the 26-year-old's vehicle on 30/6, while on the same day the café was targeted by criminals, who blew up the glass façade of the premises, causing damage to its interior.

In another case of placement of an explosive device, two of the four minors who are already in custody for a series of criminal acts committed in recent weeks in Limassol are allegedly involved.

According to information, the Limassol TAE obtained testimony against two 17-year-olds, who are allegedly related to the placement of a bomb in a machine shop, owned by a Syrian national, which occurred on May 26.

The two minors are already in custody for other cases being investigated by the authorities, while it is not excluded that they will be connected to additional offenses, as investigations continue at an intensive pace.

The investigating authorities are expected to proceed with further testimony and examination of evidence, in order to fully substantiate the new case that comes to add to the already burdened criminal past of the young suspects.

So far, two of the four minors seem to be involved in three bombings of the pub, in the vehicle of a 26-year-old friend of the owner of the pub and in the machine shop of Syros. Also, together with the other two minors, 14 and 15 years old, they are involved in the theft of a vehicle, in the robbery of a bakery, while the latter were also in the vehicle of the perpetrators who placed the explosive device in the beer garden.
