On January 1, 2026, the tax transformation will begin unequivocally, said the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, during a meeting at the Presidential Palace. Mr. Christodoulides clarified that no extension will be given, stressing that today all pending cases are closed so that the relevant bills can be prepared for submission to the Parliament.
As he said, there will be a final briefing of the parties by him and the finance minister before the bills are sent to Parliament. "I do not accept any deviation from the date we have announced," he said, stressing that today's meeting is crucial for the completion of preparations.
However, as far as green taxation is concerned, according to information from "F", the Cypriot government is considering the possibility of asking Brussels again to postpone its implementation, under the weight of geopolitical developments in the Middle East. According to information from "F", the bills for the imposition of the tax, but also for the compensatory measures that will accompany it, are already ready by the technocrats of the Ministry of Finance, with the final approval by the Presidential Office pending.
A competent source said that official representations to the European Commission are expected soon, while depending on the response that Nicosia will receive, the next steps will be determined. At the same time, the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, seeks to form alliances with other EU countries, in order to request an extension for the imposition of the financial burdens of the green transition, which was originally planned for 2027.
At the next EU Summit, it is not excluded that the issue will be formally raised, with a possible joint letter from member states to Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
On the contrary, the landfill tax, at €10 per ton, and the water tax, at €0.01 per cubic meter, will be applied normally, burdening the average household with about €22 per annum.
