The great success of the Cypriot delegation at the 20th Games of Small States of Europe in Andorra was welcomed in a written statement by the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, expressing pride and emotion for the distinction of Cyprus, which won the first place in the medal table, with 36 gold, 30 silver and 42 bronze medals – a performance achieved for the first time since 2011.
"Our athletes, with soul, sacrifice, stubbornness and dedication, honoured our country, raised our flag high and embodied the best face of the new generation: the one that dreams, works and succeeds," the President said.
Mr. Christodoulides warmly congratulated all the athletes, coaches, the Cyprus Sports Organization (CSO), the sports federations and the Cyprus Olympic Committee, which was responsible for organizing the mission.
In his statement, the President reaffirmed that sport is a key pillar of government policy, stressing that the focus is:
- the upgrading and creation of new sports infrastructure throughout Cyprus,
- the support of athletes and coaches with modern programs,
- and the enhancement of the extroversion of Cypriot sports with an active presence in international events.
"The Government's support for sports is an investment in the future of Cyprus, in the young generation that raises our flag high and fills us with pride," the statement concludes.
