AIRPORT ACCESS - EXPANSION AND INADEQUATE ACCESS

Filenews 10 June 2025 - by Dora Christodoulou

The official start of the expansion projects of Larnaca and Paphos airports, as well as the already noticeable increase in flights as we enter the summer tourist season, brings to the fore again, especially in the case of Paphos Airport, the problem of incomplete and inadequate access to and from the unit.

Institutions and stakeholders of the province urgently reiterate to the competent state departments the importance of the completion of the project, pointing out that this is essentially the first image that visitors from Cyprus see and it is inconceivable that this image concerns a road network of obsolete times and dysfunctional.

The red light lit by the Environmental Authority in the major project of the completion of the road, has been causing reactions in Paphos for a long time and initiates the coordination of interventions and dynamic reactions by local bodies.

The new recent admission of the competent governing bodies that the "no" of the competent department in the construction and of the second part of the project poses serious problems in the Government's ability to proceed with its implementation, has caused an uproar in Paphos, given that on a daily basis the practical problems created in the operation of the airport by the outdated road that serves it are evident. While the upcoming tourist season seems to be even better than last year and therefore the practical traffic problems that will arise will be correspondingly large.

The Department of the Environment has concluded that the changes proposed in the environmental study prepared by the Paphos authorities in order to overcome the initial objections that arose are not enough to differentiate the whole situation in the most positive way, and even more, it stresses, that the existing road to Paphos Airport can meet the needs of the unit and the district with some improvements.

This development is in stark contrast to the hopes of the Paphos stakeholders who still have the strong belief that the only impact in the Natura area will concern only a small part of the river Ezousa that passes through the site, which they argue should allow the project to go ahead.
