After a year of travel in India, a year in the 1960s, photographer Nomi Rowe is eager to present all that she witnessed and experienced to Limassol viewers. Photography lovers, travel addicts and India enthusiasts, gather round because this upcoming event is for you.
Titled A Year in 1960s India, Romi’s travel images will take over the walls of 6×6 Centre for Photography in Limassol from Friday to June 20. And she has stories to tell. In a statement about her upcoming show, she recalls how this journey began: “I set off with a backpack and a change of clothes, my sketchbook, pen, pencils and my compact 35mm film camera. I travelled slowly through Europe, the Middle East, Iran, Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka and Africa. Although unplanned and unintentional, this all took over four years without my return home to London.
“While I was in India for a year in 1963-64 in my mid-twenties, travelling, painting and meditating, bobbing along like a cork on the surface of the sea, I would sit and sketch people on buses and trains, but mostly in cafés. Often someone would invite me to come and stay in their home to make portraits of their family members. For Indians being alone is unusual, except on a spiritual retreat or pilgrimage or social misfortune and they were always very hospitable, protective and generous towards me.”
On the opening night, the exhibition will be inaugurated at 7pm and will remain open throughout the week and on the weekends.
