WHO WORKS ON MAY DAY?

 Filenews 1 May 2025

As is the case with the 11 statutory holidays of the year, there is no commercial activity for general stores, such as supermarkets and malls. Of course, in shopping malls, catering areas, i.e. cafes, restaurants and entertainment venues, will operate.

As far as special shops are concerned, they can operate today, but with a special regime for employees. Specifically, those employees who will go to work today in bakeries and kiosks (special stores), will be compensated according to the date on which they were employed. In particular, those employees who took a job under the regime that was in force before the enactment of the 2015 labour legislation, will then be compensated with a salary of 1 to 2, i.e. double the daily wage, compared to the normal one. However, those who were employed after the 2015 legislation, then the agreement they signed with the respective employer will be valid. Whether it concerns a collective agreement or a private agreement.

As far as the catering sector is concerned, as has been mentioned above, in shopping malls, but also in the rest of the country, cafes and restaurants, as well as entertainment venues (playgrounds, arcades and others) will operate normally. In relation to the public sector, the employees of the security forces (police and fire brigade) as well as the employees of hospitals with a special status will of course work.

It is reminded that the next holidays are the three days of the Holy Spirit on Monday, June 9, followed by the Assumption of the Virgin Mary on Friday, August 15.
