WHICH TRUMP TARIFFS WERE NOT OVERTURNED BY THE COURT?

 Filenews 29 May 2025

Donald Trump's first major defeat in his second presidential term is characterized by many foreign news networks yesterday's decision by the US International Trade Court to declare unconstitutional the tariffs imposed by Trump on April 2, 2025.

Specifically, it had announced tariffs of up to 50 percent on countries with which the U.S. has a trade deficit and base tariffs of 10 percent on all other trading partners. He later suspended 50 percent tariffs for 90 days to give countries time to agree to reduce barriers to U.S. exports. The basic duties remained in place.

But the court's ruling does not cancel all of Trump's tariffs. So-called sectoral tariffs, such as those on steel, aluminium and cars, remain in place, as they are based on a different legal framework.

Goldman Sachs, in its analysis today, warns that the court's decision does not tie the hands of President Trump, who - in addition to the appeal he has filed - is able to use other parts of the US legal framework to follow up on the trade war that has begun.
