The Chinese-made Anji Ansheng, the world's largest in its class, set sail on the afternoon of May 15 for its first voyage to Europe, carrying about 7,000 vehicles produced in China.
The ship's departure from Shanghai marks a major milestone, surpassing the record set a few weeks ago by the BYD Shenzhen ferry, which has also been built in China by automaker BYD.
BYD Shenzhen previously held the title of the world's largest ferry in service.
"The fact that this record was broken again in less than a month reflects the rapid growth of China's industrial sector on a medium and large scale, but also the resilience and vitality of the country's foreign trade despite the complex conditions of the global environment," said Gao Juning, deputy director of the School of Public Policy and Management at Tsinghua University.
