STRICTER PENALTIES FOR WASTING WATER ARE COMING

 Pafos Press 21 May 2025

The Council of Ministers approved a bill yesterday that significantly increases penalties for the use of a hose pipe to wash cars, sidewalks and other items.

The Director General of the Ministry of Agriculture, Andreas Grigoriou, stated on the Morning Agenda that the bill, which is being promoted in the form of an urgent bill in Parliament, provides for an increase in the extrajudicial fine from €50 to €100 or €300 if there is a repetition of the offense.

Based on the new regulations, washing with a hose remains a criminal offense, but the maximum prison sentence is increased from three to six months and the maximum fine from €500 to €3,000, or both.

At the same time, the District Local Government Organizations are designated as the competent authority, while inspectors for compliance with the legislation may be officers of the Water Development Department and members of the Police Force.

The Director General of the Ministry of Agriculture stated that it is expected that the bill will be passed into law before the Parliament's summer recess.
