RECORD NUMBER OF DRUG SEIZURES THIS YEAR

Filenews 28 May 2025 - by Michalis Hadjivasilis

The quantities of drugs that have been detected so far this year by the Ministry of Police are huge, a fact that has caused the intense mobilization of the Police as well as other departments, to stop new attempts to import them.

This year, quantities of more than 400 kilograms of cannabis have been detected compared to about 600 kilograms seized throughout 2024, indicating an unusual mobilization of smugglers, but also a huge effort by the Anti-Drug Agency to prevent them from reaching the streets.

The frequent seizures and the large quantities that were recently confiscated, led the Minister of Justice and Public Order, Marios Hartsiotis, to the offices of the Limassol Police Station, where, in addition to congratulating him on the recent successes of the team, he was informed about the whole situation.

As Mr. Hartsiotis told "F", this year so far 2/3 of last year's quantities of cannabis for the whole year have been detected, which had been characterized as a record year in terms of drug detection.

The quantities found so far, he added, correspond almost to those of the whole of 2024, which on the one hand makes us happy because these drugs do not reach users, but on the other hand, the problem that exists in general is also visible.

During the meeting, which was attended by the Assistant Chief of Operations Giannakis Georgiou and the Commander of the Ministry of Defence Christos Andreou, various issues faced by the members of the Service were discussed, so that the state can assist with the contribution of the Minister of Justice in the war against drugs.

As Mr. Hartsiotis told the members of the Limassol Police Department, the Service operates as a family, they cooperate perfectly with other departments and this solidarity is a key factor in its successes.

During the meeting, the issue of the operation of well-known CBD oils stores was also raised, for which careful actions are taken and monitored by the Ministry of Health, so that where products containing prohibited substances are available, seizures are made.

The largest quantities of drugs this year were seized in Limassol and Larnaca Airport, with the contribution of the Customs Department being enormous. Also, one of the main ways of shipping drugs is courier companies. The first drug substance seized by the Police Department is cannabis, followed by cocaine and synthetic drugs.
