'' ON THE SIDE OF HUMANITY''

Filenews 6 May 2025

On May 8th, the International Day of the Red Cross and Red Crescent is commemorated

May 8 is a landmark day for the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, as it honours the commitment of millions of people who, selflessly and selflessly, generously offer help where there is a need. Every year the World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day reminds us that even in the most difficult moments, humanism does not fade away but continues to show the way of hope.

This year's slogan "On the Side of Humanity" focuses on the core of the Movement's action: Humanity. It is the value that inspires every action, action and intervention. It is the driving force that allows Red Cross volunteers to reach anywhere on the planet, no matter how difficult the conditions are.

Humanity without borders

The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, with a presence in 191 countries and more than 16 million volunteers, is the largest humanitarian organization in the world. His idea was born on the battlefield of Solferino in 1859, when Henry Dunant saw the pain of the helpless wounded and decided to change the course of history, creating a humanitarian movement dedicated to the relief of human suffering.

One hundred and sixty-six years later, the mission continues and continues to grow. From Ukraine to Sudan and from Syria to Gaza, the Movement stands by those affected in every armed conflict and humanitarian crisis, guided by its seven fundamental principles: Humanism, Impartiality, Neutrality, Independence, Voluntary Service and International Character.

Where no one else can reach

Humanitarian action is not an easy task, especially nowadays when crises are multiplying. Wars, natural disasters, pandemics, population movements make up the urgent need for adaptation and resilience. The International Movement, listening to the needs of the time, evolves by adopting new tools, approaches and technologies, but without distancing itself from its Principles, which constitute the vehicle that allows its access where no one else can reach.

Another milestone for this year's celebrations is the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the Fundamental Principles in 1965. The Movement looks to the future by ensuring its independence and impartiality. At the same time, it pays tribute to the hundreds of volunteers who lost their lives in the line of duty. In their memory, the action of the Movement continues with even greater dedication.

Humanitarianism is also alive in Cyprus

Since its establishment in 1950 as a branch of the British Red Cross and its official establishment by Law 39 of 1967, the Cyprus Red Cross has been a particularly important pillar of solidarity and social support for thousands of our fellow citizens. The stamp of the contribution of the K.E.S. in dealing with the biggest humanitarian crisis that Cyprus experienced in 1974, with the support of thousands of our fellow human beings, remains indelible. A project that continues to this day with the support of the enclaved people of Karpas and the Maronite villages.

Moreover, today the K.E.S. offers, among other things, material and moral support to vulnerable groups. It offers food, clothing, breakfast to students, packages and love vouchers for the Christmas and Easter period, etc., assistance in dealing with and managing crises, meeting the needs of migrants, psychosocial support, restoration of family ties, conducting First Aid courses, organizing blood donations, organizing workshops and campaigns on various social, other topical issues with the aim of raising awareness among young people and nurturing principles and values of the Red Cross and, on the other hand, their active involvement in its humanitarian work.

In the context of the celebration of the World Red Cross Day – Red Crescent, the beginning of the Pancyprian Fundraiser of the K.E.S. is declared on May 8. The proceeds from the fundraiser, which will last until May 25, are allocated to the programs and actions of the Organization. We can all contribute to this effort and stand by those who need us. Every contribution counts – every participation is a step towards a more humane and just society.
