CRIME ROUND UP

 Pafos Live 27 May 2025

A 42-year-old Greek Cypriot resident of Paphos reported to the police that strangers extracted a sum of €7,000 from her bank account. The 42-year-old complained yesterday to the Paphos TAE that she received a message on her mobile phone regarding the alleged payment of an out-of-court fine of €85.

The 42-year-old entered the code she was asked for and the cunning people removed the money from her account. She realized this when he was notified by the bank about the payment of  €7,000. It is noted that the police had warned again over the weekend about the ongoing Fraud by Sending Misleading Messages for Out-of-Court Payment.

False messages are sent both through social networking sites and through mobile phones, which invite the recipient to follow a specific electronic link, in order to pay for alleged traffic violations. Police urge citizens who receive similar messages not to open suspicious links and not to give out personal or bank details.

Filenews

In an incredible way, a fraudster attempted to fool an elderly woman in Larnaca.  His action was recorded in a video posted on the internet. A complaint has already been filed with the Larnaca Police Department, which is looking for the perpetrator, who tried to get money from the woman using her son.

The incident took place in the Prodromos area of Larnaca. As can be seen in the video, a man wearing a hat, knocks on the door of the woman's house and introduces himself as Giorgos Papadopoulos, speaking with a Greek accent. Subsequently, he tricks the woman into saying the name of her son, with whom he claimed to be friends. Saying that he brought some documents for her son's car, he pretends to take it and enter the woman's house.

There he can be heard asking the woman if she has any money to give him on behalf of her son. At first he asks her for €350 and then drops to €250 then to €200. The elderly woman says that she has no money at home and tells him that her son did not ask her to give money to anyone. When the stranger realizes that he will not get money, he leaves the house empty-handed.

The elderly woman's family reported the case last night and the Police began looking for the perpetrator, against whom a case of attempted extortion of money with false representations is being investigated. As reported to Filenews, at least so far, there has been no other corresponding complaint to the Larnaca TAE.
