The Court of Dhekelia reserved for tomorrow at 9 a.m. the announcement of the sentence to the 46-year-old, who was found guilty of the brutal murder of Charalambos Konstantinidis, 52 years old, from Paralimni, on June 25, 2024 in Ormidia.

The 46-year-old was found guilty of premeditated murder after a hearing by three senior judges of the Assize Court, who rushed from Britain. The accused will be sentenced to life imprisonment, as is the case in Cypriot courts when someone is found guilty of premeditated murder. The difference in the UK's penal code is that judges will determine the minimum length of time the accused must remain in prison and when his request for release must be considered. Depending on the facts of the offence, the starting point for the minimum prison time for an adult starts from 15 and reaches up to 30 years.

During today's proceedings, there was a discussion on legal issues that arose, with the defendant's lawyer Andros Anastasiou, reserving his client's right to appeal to the English Court of Appeal for the preliminary study. The defendant's position is that he had not premeditated the crime, which was followed by a fight over financial disputes he had with the victim. We didn't have a death contract. He had no intention of killing him, nor had he planned it," Mr. Anastasiou said before the court.

During the proceedings, the 46-year-old's lawyer said his client did not consent to serve his sentence anywhere other than British bases. However, given that BB prisons are not suitable for the detention of persons serving sentences of many years in prison, it is possible, as provided for in colonial law, that a decision may be made, without his consent, to serve his sentence in Britain. In such a case, however, the accused has the right to submit a request to serve his sentence in the Central Prison of the Republic. It is noted that his lawyer asked the judges to impose the minimum sentence provided for (15 years), given that, according to the legislation of the Republic of Cyprus, at 12 years he will be able to apply for release.

It is recalled that the murder of the 52-year-old was committed on the evening of June 25 in the car paint shop of the 46-year-old defendant in Ormidia. The two had a financial difference and argued. Then the 46-year-old shot twice in the direction of the 52-year-old, injuring him in the face and then hitting him with an iron in the head. The Police of the Bases were alerted by a resident, who saw the 46-year-old near the victim's body. Patrol cars rushed to the scene, however, the perpetrator escaped in a car that was in the garage and the next day he surrendered to the authorities.
