A 26-year-old woman from Greece was sentenced to 16 years in prison by the Permanent Assize Court of Larnaca, who was arrested last March at the airport when almost 40 kilograms of cannabis were found in her luggage.

The young woman was found guilty after admitting to charges related to the importation of drugs for the purpose of supplying to other people. The young woman had arrived on March 30 at Larnaca airport. Her two pieces of luggage were checked by the Customs Department and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as soon as she arrived from Thailand, via Doha. In them, 2 nylon vacuum packs were found, inside which there were smaller packages containing cannabis plant material, with a gross weight of about 40 kg.

The defendant said that she brought the drugs in order to deliver them to a specific person, who, however, did not show up when a controlled delivery of cannabis, which is the largest quantity seized this year at Larnaca airport, was attempted.

Imposing the sentence, the Larnaca Permanent Assize Court judged as aggravating factors the frequency of drug cases that now come before it, as well as the fact that the young woman is a member of a chain of trafficking of large quantities of drugs. As mitigating factors, her age was taken into account, as well as the fact that she is the mother of two children.
