CRIME ROUND UP

 Filenews 12 May 2025

A serious case of poaching of hare during the night was reported last night by members of the Game and Fauna Service in the Limassol district.

Specifically, members of the Service, during an evening patrol and around 21:30, spotted a vehicle moving suspiciously in an area near the Parekklisia quarry.

Due to the suspicious movements of the vehicle, it was put under  surveillance and a little later the Service approached the suspicious vehicle where a member of the Service signalled to the driver of the suspicious vehicle to stop for a check.

During the vehicle objection proceedings, the members noticed that a nylon bag was ejected from the suspicious vehicle.

After the arrest and control of the vehicle, a check followed in the area where the nylon bag was ejected, which was found and inside there was a freshly killed hare.

Rights violations and selective intervention of the Police during the May 9 event, organized by the Coordinating Council of Russian Compatriots, the Russian Center for Science and Culture in Cyprus and the Russian Embassy in Cyprus, are denounced by Ukrainians in Limassol.

As they say in a statement, during the event, "Russian participants violated public order", displaying "weapons or objects that resembled weapons and flags of the unrecognized "Donetsk People's Republic" (DNR)", with the Cyprus Police not intervening to prevent the display of these symbols. Instead, they say, "the police seized placards from Ukrainian activists and their supporters, who were peacefully protesting against the event."

The announcement is as follows

On May 9, 2025, in Limassol, on 28th October Street, an event was held organized by the Coordinating Council of Russian Compatriots, the Russian Center for Science and Culture in Cyprus and the Embassy of Russia in Cyprus. During the event, Russian participants demonstrated:

• Weapons or objects that looked like guns, causing a concern for public safety.

• Flags of the unrecognized "Donetsk People's Republic" (DNR), an entity not recognized by the international community and involved in armed conflicts.

• Banners with portraits of Vladimir Putin, who is under arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court for war crimes.

Despite the obvious violations of public order, the Cyprus Police did not intervene to prevent the display of these symbols.

Instead, police seized placards from Ukrainian activists and their supporters, who were peacefully protesting against the event. This selective intervention violates the rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly, as enshrined in Articles 10 and 11 of the European Convention on Human Rights.

The complaint has already been sent to the following competent bodies:

• Cyprus Police Headquarters

• Internal Control of the Cyprus Police

• Ombudsman of Cyprus

• Ministry of Justice and Public Order of Cyprus

• Representation of the European Commission in Cyprus

• Embassy of Ukraine in Cyprus

We demand full transparency and investigation of the actions of the Police, as well as explanations for the tolerance of war symbolism and the targeted repression of peaceful protesters.

A flight from Edinburgh to Larnaca made an emergency landing at Thessaloniki’s Macedonia Airport on Saturday after a fight broke out between passengers.

Video footage published by TRT journalist Sefa Karahassan shows two individuals exchanging punches in the aircraft cabin while passengers looked on.

According to Greek authorities, a 38-year-old passenger disobeyed instructions from the captain and crew before verbally attacking a crew member and another passenger, disrupting order on the aircraft.

Greek police officers in Thessaloniki arrested the man following the emergency landing.

The incident caused disruption to the scheduled service, requiring the unplanned diversion to Greece before the flight could continue to its final destination in Cyprus.

A 15-centimetre metal dagger was found inside the car of a man who was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, the police said on Sunday.

The announcement was made following the court hearing of two men who had been arrested together on Saturday in Paphos. One, a 33-year-old, had been wanted in connection with an attempted murder, while the other, a 35-year-old was riding in a car alongside him when the arrest was made.

In addition to the dagger, various tools which could have been used to carry out a break-in were found in the car.

Both men were remanded in custody for eight days.

The pair had been arrested on Saturday after the police had, according to the Paphos police’s assistant operations director Michalis Nikolaou, placed a block of flats in the town under “discreet surveillance” after discovering that 33-year-old and a 39-year-old who was wanted in connection with a robbery were living in it.

At around 12.25pm on Saturday, the trio got into a car and left. The car was stopped by the police shortly thereafter, and all three attempted to escape, with the police discharging their weapons during the incident.

The 33-year-old and the 35-year-old were both arrested, but the 39-year-old escaped, and is yet to be apprehended.

The police’s investigation into the matter is ongoing.
