A joint statement by the Office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the Israeli Ministry of Energy, titled "An Important Step in the Implementation of the U.S.-led IMEC Vision," states:
"At the diplomatic meeting held on Sunday, May 4, 2025, between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides, with the participation of Energy Minister Eli Cohen and Cypriot Minister of Energy, Trade and Industry George Papanastasiou, it was agreed that the power cable (IMEC project) that will connect the two countries – and, in the future, connect Cyprus to Europe – will be signed this year.
The laying of the power cable is extremely important for energy security, given that Israel is considered an "island nation" from an energy point of view and given that the infrastructure corridor will be a link between East and West, between India and Europe.
The agreement on the distribution of the "Aphrodite-Yissai" natural gas field between the two countries was also discussed, negotiations for which are at an advanced stage and which are expected to be signed in the next two months.
