ANDREAS GRIGORIOU - NO WATER SUPPLY INTERRUPTIONS, PAPHOS WILL BE FULLY COVERED

Filenews 20 May 2025 - by Dora Christodoulou

A broad meeting was held at the offices of the Paphos EDA in the presence of the Director General of the Ministry of Agriculture, in order to discuss the marginal state of the water supply in the province.

Speaking at the meeting, the Ministry's Director General, Andreas Grigoriou, stressed that it has been estimated that the Paphos district's water supply needs will be increased compared to last year. Our effort, he said, is to strengthen the balance through drilling in order to cover all water supply needs with the contribution of Asprokremmos.

In addition, Mr. Grigoriou said, the contractor of the Kouklia desalination plant assures that the damage will be fully restored by August. Yesterday also, he stressed, the contract for the execution of the mobile unit in Kissonerga was signed and in addition we plan with the contractor, if necessary, to provide another two thousand cubic meters of water by July with a small portable unit or a second one with another 1500 cubic meters. He estimated, however, that these additional units will not be needed in the end and adequacy will come about with the measures already decided.

Our goal, Mr. Grigoriou stressed, is not to cut any water for water supply in any province.

The Mayor of Akamas, Marinos Lambrou, however expressed the intense anxiety of the western areas of Paphos for the situation, referring to a martyrdom that they experienced last year and that they are already beginning to experience this year. We cannot play with this issue, he stressed, the actions should have been taken earlier. I hope everything goes as well as we assure today, he said, but the situation is worrying.

The meeting was attended by officials of the Water Department, MPs and Mayors of Paphos, the NLG, PASYXE Paphos and other social institutions. The president of the Paphos Hoteliers, Euripides Loizidis, said in response to a relevant remark that no hotelier in Paphos has submitted an application for a small desalination unit, that this is not true. Simply, there was no availability in immediate time, he clarified, but in the coming days you will see that there are already at least 10 applications for units..

The meeting has been convened after the turmoil caused in the province by the decision to install all mobile units from the United Arab Emirates in Limassol.
