Caravan lovers have been upset by the new regulation of the Ministry of Tourism in Greece, which prohibits free parking outside organized camping areas.
As reported by the Greek media, the first arrests in the context of the implementation of the new law were already recorded yesterday. Specifically, in Messinia, a German couple was arrested who had parked their motorhome on a beach.
The new legislation has also caused reactions in Cyprus, as many Cypriots choose this type of tourism in Greece, especially after the start of the maritime connection between the two countries. This year is the fourth consecutive year that the route of the ship that connects them takes place.
"The law, which has been passed, deprives us of the vacations we used to take for so many years. They have passed a law, while there are not enough campsites to accommodate everyone who chooses this type of vacation. The organized campsites are overcrowded from very early on and not all the people can fit," a Cypriot camper tells Filenews.
Also, as he points out, the new regulation is a blow not only to those who choose motorhome tourism, but also to many entrepreneurs who are involved in this sector.
Penalties for violation of the provisions
The new law, which was passed in January 2025 and has already been fully implemented, puts a definitive end to the parking of such vehicles in public places, regardless of the owner.
Specifically, the parking of trailers, semi-trailers and motorhomes is prohibited in areas such as:
- Archaeological sites
- Seashores
- Beaches
- Edges of public forests and in general in public areas.
The penalties for violation of the provisions are particularly severe and correspond to those for illegal camping.
Specifically, anyone who parks a motorized vehicle in a public place risks imprisonment for up to three months and a fine of €300 per person, while in case of referral to court, the fine can reach up to €3,000.
