Disruption and daily tensions in a specific department of a state hospital with the nurses of the Department (and not only) reporting to a doctor for inappropriate and unprofessional behaviour and bullying against them.
The OCYPY, following instructions given by the Ministry of Health, proceeded to an administrative investigation. The investigation was completed and handed over to the Minister of Health and the Minister in turn is studying the possibility of a disciplinary investigation.
The doctor, however, has already informed that he intends to leave the public service and this intention has again caused reactions and upheaval in this particular hospital.
The initial complaint against a doctor of a state hospital was made to the Ministry of Health and the State Health Services Organization by a nurses' union last January.
Instructions were given for conducting an administrative investigation and in the context of this investigation they were summoned – as reported by "F" – and gave their own testimony to more than 60 nurses, who work with the doctor in question.
In the initial complaint as well as in their own reports, in the context of the administrative investigation, the nurses referred to derogatory behaviour, constant pressure during patient service, zeroing of their qualifications and nursing knowledge, insults and irritation that often leads to tensions in the presence of relatives and patients. Some of the nurses, according to the same information, allegedly referred to unnecessary bad behaviour against patients or their relatives.
In fact, during the administrative investigation, the trade union representing this group of nurses, proceeded with a second letter to the Minister of Health and the OCYPY, referring to an attempt by the doctor, under investigation, to intimidate and blackmail witnesses, resulting in "undermining the integrity and transparency of the process".
At the same time, the trade union called on the Ministry of Health and the OCYPY to intervene and protect the staff who are called to give their testimony to the officer who had undertaken the conduct of the investigation and to ensure the "restoration of normality and justice" in this case.
This fact, that is, the doctor's interventions, had caused additional tension in this Department with all that this entails for the proper service of patients.
The administrative investigation was completed some time ago and was handed over to the Ministry of Health for further investigation. Until yesterday, however, the complaining nurses had not been informed of the result, but they have been informed of the doctor's intention to resign from the public service in July. This information led, as expected, to a new upheaval, as the nurses believe that the doctor's departure from the public service does not justify them and simply "closes" the case.
A competent source from the Ministry of Health told "F" that the case "has not been forgotten, simply based on the administrative investigation, the possibility of conducting a disciplinary investigation against the doctor is being studied".
The information that the doctor intends to leave the public service in July has also been put before the Ministry of Health, while the complaining nurses have also expressed their concern about the event to the trade union that represents them, arguing that the departure of the doctor, who, as they say, "was never put on leave", will lead to "a cover-up without himself suffering the consequences for his behaviour".
