Once again in recent months, an overflow of the pumping station of the Wastewater Treatment Station located in the coastal area of Geroskipou has been recorded.
Despite the representations of the Paphos HOC to the managing company and while a decision was taken to replace the pumping station, the problem reappeared in the last few days, causing new intense reactions.
The municipal councillor of DIKO in the Municipality of Ierokipia, Marios Hatzimitsis, told "F" that this is a long-standing problem that has not found its solution and that only this winter it appeared three times.
The sewage spills into the road and ends up in the sea, posing a direct danger to the health of bathers, he stresses. It is a Blue Flag beach and everyone understands what this means, Mr. Hatzimitsis points out, also mentioning that although assurances had been given by the private administrator of the unit that the problem would be solved, after the problem with the pumps they now report a problem with the computers that regulate the operation of the system.
We are on the verge of the tourist season and we see sewage flowing on the beach on roads and coasts, while the smell exacerbates the problem, he concluded.
AKEL Paphos also issued a statement on the issue, in which it emphasizes that the recent events prove once again the correctness of the position of AKEL, which from the very first moment opposed the concession of the Biological Unit of SAPA to a private individual, a decision that was taken by a majority about a year before the start of the implementation of the Local Government reform.
AKEL asks the EDA to demand and demand the definitive solution of the problem from the private company. Otherwise, it concludes, the EDA must terminate the contract with the consortium and regain management of the Biological Unit.
