The recent events with the incidents, caused by young people, mostly minors, in Agia Fyla, in Limassol, are not isolated. These are behaviours that are now an almost daily phenomenon. After all, we watched the same with young people from the Church and Pyrgos. Organized youths cause damage to public buildings, private property, cars, while they are divided into gangs and fight, using clubs and stones.
The DESCRIPTION of the events is done in order to highlight the seriousness of the issue. To ring a bell to those who can intervene and are currently watching. We must recognize that the state services are trying to find solutions. It seems, however, as it emerges from the result, that no matter how many efforts are made, there is still a way to go in order to address the whole issue. Besides, according to official admission, the Police, in the case of the incidents in Agia Fyla, sent a patrol to the area, but when they saw the volume of rioters, they returned to its base and to make a complete plan. It took them two and a half hours to come back. So one can understand what this delay means.
JUVENILE delinquency is a timeless phenomenon. It is clear, however, that this delinquency is increasing significantly and intensely worryingly. If this is understood, which we believe is possible, solutions must also be provided. There are no magic recipes. However, there are prescriptions for treatment.
NO ONE is born a delinquent. There are many reasons and causes that shape this phenomenon. And they can be identified and managed. This is a profoundly social issue, the result of many problems.
MORE psychologists are needed in schools, as mentioned. If it is found that this will help, it should be done immediately.
RECENTLY, the president of the Pancyprian Association of Psychologists, Giorgos Metaxas, referred to the need for prevention before the issues get out of hand. As he said, the state will save millions of euros, which it now spends on managing the bad consequences of delinquent and other bad behaviours. According to research data from the University of Cyprus (2020), 18% of students experience anxiety or depression, but only 5% receive adequate support.
The aim is to have scientific prevention. To help the children. Parents and teachers should be helped to help the children in turn.
AS long as they remain in theory, the problem will grow. As long as they remain in the findings, the issue will not only not be addressed, but at the same time will increase. This is confirmed not only in Cyprus, but also in countries facing a bigger problem.
THEREFORE, the issue should not be allowed to be perpetuated, as it will then become uncontrollable.
