The Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment is proceeding with the creation of an integrated and appropriate network of municipal waste management facilities, including the upgrade of the Pentakomos and Koshi OEDA.
In a statement on the issue, he notes that the issue of waste management "is one of the Government's priorities and aims at the holistic regulation of the issue on the basis of the principles of the circular economy".
With regard to the recent problems that have arisen in the sorting and disposal of packaging waste, for which the collective system of Green Dot Cyprus is responsible, the Ministry of Agriculture informs that "the Department of the Environment has proceeded with strict recommendations to the collective system in order to immediately resolve any collection issues and to continue unhindered the collection of packaging waste that was collected separately and reported. by the Department, in writing to Green Dot Cyprus that the recovery of energy from packaging waste collected separately is prohibited".
It is also pointed out that the collective system should immediately find options for the disposal of packaging waste that was collected separately either through the utilization of appropriately licensed units in Cyprus, or by sending them to units abroad.
More generally, regarding waste management, the Ministry states that it aims to upgrade the existing EDAs so that they can process both the total municipal mixed waste they receive and the separately collected organic waste. It also notes that the end of the disposal of waste at the Paphos landfill without the treatment and management of the separately collected organic waste of the district is proceeding.
Continuing, among other things, he mentions that the Feasibility Study has already been announced, which will examine the degree of response of the existing infrastructure to the data of Cyprus, the need for the construction of new infrastructure per province as well as the need for energy utilization of residues after waste treatment.
It adds that tenders have already been announced for the provision of consulting services for the inspection and evaluation of the facilities and equipment of the Koshi OEDA unit and the SMA of Skarinos and the evaluation of their performance in the context of the receipt of the facilities, provision of services for the preparation of Tender Documents for the recruitment of a Contractor for operation, maintenance/repair and partial upgrade of the OEDA and the SMA of Limassol district.
Also, for a transitional (interim) period and support of the Contracting Authority and for the provision of services of an accredited Consultant Designer for the updating and expansion of the Study for the inspection and evaluation of the facilities and equipment of the OEDA and the SMA of the Limassol District that was prepared during the period November – December 2023 and the preparation of a detailed cost estimate for the maintenance and repair and/or replacement of all its electromechanical equipment Unit.
The Ministry of Agriculture also mentions that the Department of Environment is monitoring the whole issue and is taking appropriate actions to ensure the unhindered collection and disposal of packaging waste on the basis of the current legislation and its appropriate final disposal, in order to rationally manage packaging waste and the transition to a circular economy, on the basis of the provisions of the Packaging and Packaging Waste Law of 2002 to 2022 and the relevant Regulations.
