The solemn atmosphere of Good Friday will be shared by a large number of believers in Paphos at the meeting of the Epitaphs of the Cathedral of St. Theodore and the Holy Church of St. Kendeos, at 28th October Square (Municipal Hall). Continuing a decades-old tradition, the Municipality of Paphos is organizing the ceremony again this year in collaboration with the Holy Metropolis of Paphos, the 8th Infantry Regiment of the National Guard, the Paphos District Police Directorate and the Crusader Corps.
According to the program of the whole ceremony, the two Epitaphs will end up in 28th October Square around 9.30 p.m. From 8.00 p.m., the Praise of the Epitaph of Lamentation will be broadcast in the Square, in accordance with the spirit of the day of the climax of the Divine Drama.
The procession of the Epitaph of the Cathedral of St. Theodore is expected to begin around 9.20 p.m. and will follow the following route: Agiou Theodorou Street – Kostis Palamas Square – 25th March Street – Dionysios Solomos Square – G. Griva Digeni Avenue – 28th October Square. For the procession, the established procession will be formed with the participation of the Holy Clergy and the officials. It will be preceded by the Philharmonic of the Municipality of Paphos under the direction of Mr. Zacharias Evangelou and will be accompanied by an honorary contingent of the National Guard and members of the Crusader Corps.
Around 9.40 p.m. and after the meeting of the two Epitaphs, a prayer will be chanted from a platform in the 28th October Square by the Metropolitan of Paphos, Mr. Tychicos. For another year, the Choir of the Paphos Music Club will sing the Epitaph Lament under the direction of Mr. Sotiris Karagiorgis, enriching the solemn atmosphere.
The Municipality of Paphos and the Paphos District Police Directorate have made special arrangements for the smooth conduct of the whole event and the avoidance of traffic congestion. Specifically:
(1) From 1.00 p.m. to 10.00 p.m. on Good Friday, April 18, it will be prohibited to park any vehicles and other wheeled vehicles on 25th March Street (adjacent to the Public Garden) and from 8.30 p.m. in the other streets and points through which the procession will pass.
(2) During the period 8.00 p.m. – 11.00 p.m., the streets of Gladstonos, Nikos Antoniadis, Andreas Ioannou, Ioannis Agroti, 25th Martiou, the section of G. Griva – Digeni Avenue from its junction with 25th March Street to Kennedy Square and the section of Evagoras Pallikaridi Avenue from Kennedy Square to its junction with Andreas Tselepou and Charalambou Mouskou streets will be closed periodically for traffic.
(3) In order to cover the increased needs for parking vehicles, the Parking Lot next to the old Central Police Station, the Iakoveio Gymnasium (former G.S.K. stadium), part of the stadium next to the Seventh Primary School (entrance from Grigori Afxentiou Street), the parking lot of the New Government Buildings, the open space next to the Buildings of the Paphos District Administration will be used, the Parking Lot of the Municipal Library, the newly created area next to the building of the P.E.O. (Nikos Antoniadi Street), the open space behind the apartment building "Sylva Court" (access from Ermou Street and Nikou Antoniadi Street) and the area next to the Pontic Hellenic Genocide Monument (Evagoras Pallikaridi Avenue).
Drivers are invited to faithfully apply the emergency measures and comply with the road signs and the instructions of the Police and the Traffic Service of the Municipality.
On this occasion, the Municipality of Paphos appeals to people of mainly young age not to use firecrackers and other prohibited pyrotechnic items, endangering the health and fitness of themselves and their fellow human beings.
