FINES OF €30,600 TO GESY PROVIDERS - CHARGED HIO FOR RADIODIAGNOSTIC EXAMS OF DOCTORS OUTSIDE THE SYSTEM

Fines, totalling €30,600, were imposed by the Health Insurance Organization on six radiodiagnostic centers for MRI and CT scans that bore the signature of a doctor or doctor who was not a radiologist outside the GHS.

In March, the Organization imposed fines of €39,000 and recovered an additional €43,360 that had been paid to health service providers for services that were investigated and the claims were deemed unjustified.

According to the relevant announcement of the HIO, fines were imposed on radiodiagnostic centers "for the submission of medical acts and/or activities related to cardiac MRI and CT scans for cardiac angiography which were signed by a doctor who was either not contracted with the Organization or did not hold the specialty of radiology/radiodiagnostics".

Of particular interest is the case of a doctor specializing in orthopaedics who was fined €2,000 because, as it was found after an investigation, during surgery he used consumables that are not included in the relevant lists of the GHS and, as we are informed, he called on patients to pay the cost out of their pockets.

Finally, 6 other doctors specializing in orthopaedics, a urologist and a plastic surgeon, were fined €800 after it was found that they were performing medical operations in a place that did not meet the conditions set by the Organization.

In one case of radiodiagnostic tests, "arbitrary access to the medical history and medical profile of a beneficiary" was found.
