FILENEWS POLL- LAMPRATZIES - YOU ARE ALL RESPONSIBLE, TAKE MEASURES - LOUD MESSAGE TO THE AUTHORITIES

 Filenews 25 April 2025

The anger of society is evident around what has been happening in recent years regarding the lambratzies, which have turned from a custom into an arena of delinquency, illegality and deviants. In fact, the loss of a human life this year, even from an accident, has peaked the reaction. This picture is pervasive in the results of the survey conducted by Filenews in collaboration with Prime Market Research and Consulting Ltd.

The vast majority of the 4,010 people who successfully responded to the survey questionnaire send a clear and resounding message that the State must proceed swiftly with legislative measures and ensure their effective control. It is characteristic that, apart from the individual positions on the responsibilities and measures to be taken, on the question of whether the custom of lambratzia should be maintained, public opinion appears almost divided. 54% are in favour and 46% against, possibly because of indignation because the deviations have been going on for years and the authorities are not intervening effectively.

Legislation... yesterday

The message that is extracted from the question regarding the legislative regulation of the custom of lambratzia is shocking. Society answers "Yes" to 89% (80% definitely yes, 9% probably yes).

Everyone's responsibility

As for who bears the responsibility for regulating the lighting of the fires, public opinion divides the responsibility by a small margin between the Municipalities, the Parliament and the Police. Specifically, 63% were answered by the Municipalities, 52% by the Parliament and 47% by the Police. A small percentage of 6% answered parents and 3% answered all of the above-mentioned.

Parents in the crosshairs for this year

Contrary to the above-mentioned question, however, when it comes to this year's atrocities and the loss of human life, the vast majority of those who bear the responsibility are parents at the top at 63%. 52% target the Police, 49% the Parliament and 47% the Municipalities

Who should grant the licenses

Interesting are the positions as to who should issue the permits for the lighting of the lampratzia. The majority is answered by local authorities at 39%, while the percentages are lower for the Police (17%), the Fire Brigade (11%) and church committees (6%). However, it is noteworthy that a percentage of 24% answer all of the above. A fact that should be taken into account by the authorities. Because the message is clear that one in four chooses the mandatory cooperation of those involved in order to have a better result.

Anarchist elements

To the question "Do you believe that anarchist elements are hiding behind the custom of lambratzia in order to create problems?", the answer of public opinion is clear. With a percentage of 72% (51% definitely yes, 21% probably yes) it is in the affirmative. Certainly not 9% answered and probably not 15%.

Effective policing, strict fines and criminalisation of firecrackers

The position of society is also absolutely clear as to the measures that must be taken. Specifically, to the question of whether there should be effective policing of neighbourhoods to prevent incidents, 86% (70% definitely yes, 16% probably yes) answered yes.

Overwhelming yes at 81% and on the question of whether there should be strict fines for lighting fires. Even more overwhelming was the result in the question "Do you agree with the criminalization of the use of firecrackers", where 91% answered yes.
