CYPRUS IS DROWNING IN DUST - WARNING TO VULNERABLE GROUPS

 Filenews 2 April 2025

A dust incident is recorded today, Wednesday, April 2, 2025, in Cyprus, according to an announcement by the Department of Labour Inspection. Measurements from the Air Quality Monitoring Network's ground stations show increased concentrations of inhalable particulate matter (PM10), which may affect human health.

The public, and especially vulnerable groups of the population – such as children, the elderly and people with respiratory problems – "are asked to avoid travel or stay in open spaces until the phenomenon subsides".

The Department reminds employers of the obligation to implement the Code of Practice for the protection of persons working outdoors during dust incidents, as defined in Decree K.D.P. 410/2022. Employers are required to assess risks and take appropriate organisational and technical measures, while workers must use appropriate personal protective equipment.

The latest hourly dust concentration measurements at 08:00 recorded the following values (in μg/m³):

  • Paralimni: 173.4
  • Weight: 150.9
  • Larnaca: 88.9
  • Limassol: 74.1
  • Nicosia: 65.2
  • Agia Marina Xyliatou: 55.6
  • Paphos: 36.9

The legislation sets the daily average value as a limit of 50 μg/m³. The indication 'dust' refers to particles with a diameter of less than 10 micrometers (PM10), which can penetrate the respiratory system.
