The 49-year-old Swede, Hans Jonny Uven, was sentenced to 18 months in prison by the Permanent Assize Court of Larnaca. He escaped on December 22, 2024 from a private clinic in Larnaca, receiving help, according to his claims, from his lawyer and a police officer.
The defendant was found guilty after his own admission to the escape charge and will be the main prosecution witness in the trial for the other two, which will begin on June 23.
By imposing the sentence, the Permanent Assize Court of Larnaca measured his admission as mitigating factors, but also the fact that he actively contributed to the investigation of the case. It is noted that his defense lawyers conveyed their client's willingness to testify as a prosecution witness.
Due to the fact that the Swedish authorities have requested the extradition of the 49-year-old, who was wanted for a fraud of up to €90 million, it is not excluded that after he testifies he will be sent to his country for the continuation of his sentence.
It is recalled that the accused was arrested on December 6, when he appeared at Larnaca airport to depart for Bahrain and it was found that a European warrant was pending against him from the Swedish authorities. On December 9, the 49-year-old reported that he did not feel well and was transferred to a clinic, where it was found that he had acute gastroenteritis, and then transferred to another.
On December 22, he removed the bed railing and escaped from the clinic by jumping out of the window. The next day, he was found hiding in an apartment building under construction in Larnaca and was arrested. During the interrogation, he pleaded guilty, stating that he did not want to return to Sweden because of the cold weather and because of the fear of people with whom he had financial differences.
He then implicated a 44-year-old police officer and his 54-year-old lawyer in the case. The 44-year-old police officer is alleged to be the person who brought him into contact with the lawyer and as the one who bought the mobile phone cards that were handed over to the prisoner, as well as the shoes he was wearing during the escape. As far as the lawyer is concerned, she is alleged to be the person who handed over to the Swede a mobile phone, chargers, sneakers, a key to handcuffs, as well as a map with a meeting point after the escape.
