74,000 EXTRAJUDICIAL PAYMENTS WERE PAID OUT OF THE 250,000 UNDELIVERED

Filenews 15 April 2025

It is expected that 100,000 will be paid for by the cameras in less than three months, after the police had announced that they would start criminal prosecutions.

Until yesterday, as the director of the Traffic Department of the Police Headquarters, Harris Evripidou, told "F", around 74,000 out-of-court payments had been paid out of the 250,000 undelivered that were pending from the beginning of the implementation of the photolabeling system until September 2024.

On 8/1/2025, the Police had announced that those citizens who do not pay their out-of-court fees by March 31 would start registering criminal cases in the Courts and invited them to search on the platform created by the management company whether an out-of-court case was pending against them and to pay it. The decision of the Police provoked the reaction of the MPs who registered an issue with the Legal Committee asking for explanations.

The Police, together with the Legal Service, explained that it was voluntary that someone would enter the platform and if they wanted to pay their excise fee, while following the recommendations of the Commissioner for Personal Data Protection, this process will be done through the government portal Cy login.

After the reactions of the MPs, an extension of one month was given for the repayment of the out-of-court payments, i.e. until April 30, and then the possibility of registering cases in the courts will be examined, with the first, according to our information, those concerning people who, although sought by donors, refused to receive their extrajudicial payment. There will be an agreement between the Police and the Legal Service on the issue.

It is estimated that by the end of the new deadline, those who will respond will reach 90-100,000, since about 600 out-of-court payments are paid daily and it is expected that in the last few days there will be an increase.

As for the proposal for a law submitted by the MP of the Democratic Rally Nikos Georgiou to publicize the location of vans with portable cameras, the Traffic Police will take a position in the Parliament when the issue is discussed. As it was duly explained to "F", the proposal does not concern the way the van will be set up on the side of the road, but seeks to inform the public about the place where there is a mobile camera. As we were also told, today the places where the mobile cameras are "set up" are known to drivers since they are almost the same and it was pointed out that drivers must be careful all the time and not because they will be informed that there is a camera at a specific point.

It is noted that the issue had previously been raised in the Road Safety Council under Yiannis Karousos, in the Ministry of Transport, however, it did not proceed since it was decided that citizens should drive in compliance with the Road Traffic Code and not based on where cameras are available.
