The impressive incident was captured on video, which is already making the rounds on the internet, causing mixed emotions among fishing enthusiasts and friends of the sea.

The shark, as provided for by the Legislation, was immediately released.

What is Shortfin Mako?

The Shortfin Mako is one of the most impressive and fastest shark species in the world. It belongs to the Lamnidae family and can reach speeds of over 70 km/h , making it the fastest shark in the world.

Characteristics of the species:

  • Length (as an adult): up to 4 meters
  • Weight: up to 500 kg
  • Diet: carnivorous – feeds mainly on fish such as tuna, swordfish and other marine species
  • Habitat: Temperate and tropical seas, often in open waters
  • Conservation status: Threatened species according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)

Although Mako are not usually dangerous to humans, due to their speed and strength they are treated with respect by fishermen and researchers.

The incident in Paphos highlights once again the richness and diversity of marine life in the Cypriot seas, while Andreas Panagiotidis' attitude is an example to be emulated by all those active at sea
