 in-cyprus 13 March 2025

The first liquefied natural gas (LNG) powered vessel has docked at Limassol’s container terminal, the operator announced on Thursday.

Eurogate Container Terminal Limassol welcomed the CMA CGM SALAMANQUE LNG, a 205-metre vessel with a capacity of 2,126 TEU (twenty-foot equivalent units), Eurogate said.

The arrival represents “a tangible example of good practice and alternative solutions towards a green energy transition in the shipping sector,” according to Eurogate.

LNG-powered vessels typically produce significantly lower emissions compared to conventional marine fuels, particularly regarding sulphur oxides and particulate matter.

The use of LNG as marine fuel contributes to reduced gas emissions and air pollution, supporting the maritime transport sector’s environmental objectives, the terminal operator said.

Eurogate Container Terminal Limassol highlighted sustainable development as a “strategic priority” for its operations, stating it is committed to supporting environmentally friendly initiatives that contribute to the shipping sector’s green growth.
