The Church of Cyprus insists on the position that "Orthodox dogma does not allow cremation" and states that the announcement of the opening of the first crematory in Cyprus does not change its stance.
The Church of Cyprus will not hold an exodus service in case of cremation, a church source told POLITIS, who was asked to comment on the announcement of the creation of the first crematory in Cyprus, which is expected to open in the summer of 2026 in Paphos.
"The Orthodox dogma," the church source said, "does not allow cremation of the dead," clarifying that this concerns those who will go through the cremation process by their own decision. "This excludes," he said, "those cases where the cremation of the deceased occurred as a result of an accident, such as fire."
