A bus stop built sideways in an alleyway between two houses, on a short stretch of pavement ending in a field in Alaminos, became the butt of a parody on social media on Wednesday.
Cyprus Mail called the village community council, whose rep confirmed that the bus stop, squeezed into a pavement area between the two houses and facing one of them, had been approved and constructed by the “competent authorities” who “came one day and plonked it there”.
George Chrysanthou of Alpha News posted the humorous video showing two passengers (actors) repeatedly missing the bus because of its awkward placement.
One of the actors, presents as a high school student saying, “I’ve been missing the bus for a week, no school again!”
The Alaminos community council confirmed that the bus stop is indeed a busy one and is used by high school students.
“My friend this is a top-notch bus stop, European patent. We used to have it across the street but it was too dangerous, what with all the passing cars, and children were endangered. So, we put it here in this dead end instead,” the actor playing the public works official called to the scene, tells the stranded passenger.
He then adds that the bus stop is an especially privileged one since the owners of the two houses adjacent treat would-be passengers to homemade lemonade and food.
The ministry of transport came under fire recently for its newly installed so-called “smart bus stops” island wide, which Minister Alexis Vafeades had been pressed into defending, while critics charged they were badly designed and placed the wrong way around for a left-hand drive country.
The minister justified their design saying they were intended this way in order to accommodate blind travellers and that the pillar blocking passengers from the bus driver’s view was there so that bus drivers would be able to gauge where to stop.
