ROAD TOLLS - CYPRIOT DRIVERS WHO DO NOT PAY THEM IN EU COUNTRIES, WILL NOT BE SPARED

 Filenews 1 March 2025

Cyprus may not have imposed tolls on its roads, but Cypriots who use their vehicles in EU countries and do not pay tolls will not be spared.

The Ministry of Transport has put to public consultation, a harmonizing bill which obliges our country to give information to another EU member state in relation to the driver who did not pay tolls as he was obliged to. As the senior official of the ministry, Afroditi Kofteros, told "F", although Cyprus does not have tolls, it exchanges information with EU member states when a Cypriot driver failed to pay tolls while driving his vehicle with Cypriot numbers. Although, as he explained, there are few cases where vehicles with Cypriot numbers are transferred to European countries because we are an island, however, we are obliged to approve the Directive.

In order to identify a vehicle and the owner or holder of such vehicle, for which a failure to pay a road fee has been established, the Republic of Cyprus grants access only to the national contact points of other Member States to the following national vehicle registration data, with the competence to carry out a relevant automated search: a) Vehicle data and b) data of the owner or holder of the vehicle.

For the exchange of these data, the Republic of Cyprus designates the Department of Road Transport of the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works as the National Contact Point. The Republic of Cyprus shall take the necessary measures to ensure that the exchange of information between Member States takes place exclusively between national contact points.

According to the bill, the Republic of Cyprus takes the necessary measures to ensure that the exchange of information is carried out through the software application of the European Vehicle and Driving Licence Information System (Eucaris).
