Fileleftheros information from parliamentary sources indicate that the President of the Republic sent a letter to the President of the Parliament, Annita Demetriou, asking her for her own actions, so that two bills concerning the production and adequacy of electricity in the country are immediately voted by Parliament.
The President asks Ms. Demetriou to promote the adoption of the bill amending the law on the establishment and operation of the Cyprus Energy Regulatory Authority (CERA), so that the members of the senior management are increased from three to five. The bill was tabled in Parliament in December 2024, but so far has not even been put forward, by the Chairman of the Energy Committee, Kyriakos Hatzigiannis, before the members of the Committee for discussion. A possible approval of the bill is likely to resolve, among other things, significant problems of coordination, cooperation and serving the public interest, which have peaked within CERA in recent months.
Nikos Christodoulides also asks Annita Demetriou to promote and approve the bill to amend the law on the regulation of the electricity market, in order to incorporate into domestic law the new EU Directive on electricity and especially the provision for the derogation recently granted by the European Union to the Republic of Cyprus. in order to operate centralized -state- energy storage within the electricity network (and outside the market), under the responsibility of the Cyprus Transmission System Operator (TSO).
The approval of the bill will allow, according to the Government, to address the serious problems of system stability, the immediate risks to the adequacy and coverage of electricity needs, but also to limit production cuts from residential - or commercial - photovoltaic systems. The bill is scheduled to be discussed at today's session of the Energy Committee.
