The issue of the increase in out-of-court cases (not for cameras) for specific offenses that, according to data from the Traffic Police, cost lives, was referred to the Committee.
The issue was discussed today at the Road Safety Council along with the establishment of a Training School for Offenders. The Traffic Police Department has recommended and the Ministry of Justice has promoted to the Council, the increase in out-of-court violations for four violations that have been proven, on the basis of data and analyses, to cause fatal road collisions.
Specifically, a suggestion was made for an increase in out-of-court cases for:
Helmet: From €200 that is currently to go to €250 and in case of repetition of the same offense within three years, from €250 that applies it will go to €500.
Mobile: From €150 it will increase to €200 and in case of repetition of the illegality in three years it will double and from €300 it will go to €400.
Belts: From €150 the extrajudicial fee will increase to €200 and if the offence is repeated in the next three years, from €300 it will increase to €400.
The increases include the non-use of license plates by motorcyclists, where the extrajudicial fee from €80 today will go to €100 for the first time and if repeated will increase to €200.
The Road Safety Council, chaired by Transport Minister Alexis Vafeadis and attended by Justice Minister Marios Hartsiotis, decided before adopting or rejecting the proposal, to examine the issue by the Commission and come back with recommendations.
Various views were put before the Council, such as the out-of-court procedure for the first time the infringement takes place to remain as it is and for the second time to be doubled, or increased from the outset without then being doubled, while the solution of the fine in conjunction with the performance of Community work was also mentioned on the table.
The Council, according to information provided by Filenews, also addressed the issue of establishing a Training School for Offending Drivers, with the legislation having been passed since 2018. The Minister of Justice informed that the tender has been announced with a maturity of March 28, there has been satisfactory interest and the award will take place in June. It is estimated that by the end of the year the School will be ready to operate.
During the meeting of the Road Safety Council, the issue of reducing the speed limit in city centers to 30 km from the current 50 km was also raised. This is also a requirement of the EU when the Ministry of Transport prepares a special study on the subject.
